Tips to Identify Whether Your Culture will be a Fit for the Candidate

Companies often hire for skills and fire for fit. I know you are totally aware of that!

Before spending time sharing a lot of information about your unique culture, as tempting as that is, ask questions that will give you candid valuable information about the culture in which the candidate is happiest and most productive.

If the candidate asks you to describe the culture, BEFORE you answer, say: “Sure. What specifically would you like to know?”

The answer to that tells you what is important to the candidate.

Consider adding these questions to your screening:

  1. Tell me what’s happening in your current situation. This replaces “Why” questions about leaving current or previous position if they are unemployed, and gives you much more useful information about the candidate.. Along with some great insights into what is motivating them to consider your position, you will get a sense of how they felt about that particular culture. Listen for comments that reflect they were not a culture fit in those positions. Or perhaps they feel it was an ideal culture.
  1. As you do your questions based on their resume, ask the candidate how they would describe the culture at their previous companies. Ask if it was an ideal culture for them, or if they would have wanted something different. What would have been better? Or if they loved that environment, what was it that they especially valued?

This gives much better insight into the type of environments in which the candidate will be happiest and most productive. And where they will not be a good fit. They may already have a successful track record in an environment like yours. Or they may already know they don’t do well in an environment with the characteristics you know really exist in your company. But if you ask a direct question, you may not hear the real story.

Use these questions and you will hear more truthful information than if you ask if they could work or have worked in {describing your company’s culture}.

Be sure to share the candidate’s comments and your assessment of their ability to fit productively into your culture with your HM.
